Article: Why Women Are Buying Their Own Diamonds

Why Women Are Buying Their Own Diamonds

There was a time when an important diamond usually came with an occasion.

An engagement. An anniversary. A birthday. A husband.

I think that has changed.

More and more women come to me because they simply want to buy something beautiful for themselves. Sometimes it’s a pair of diamond studs they’ve wanted forever. Sometimes it’s a tennis bracelet. And sometimes it’s a very serious diamond ring.

I love that.

Jewelry has always marked moments in our lives, but the person buying it doesn’t have to be someone else.

A woman might celebrate a promotion, a new chapter, a personal milestone, or nothing at all. Sometimes the reason is simply, “I’ve worked hard, I love it, and I want it.”

And why shouldn’t that be enough?

I also notice that women buy differently when they’re buying for themselves. They’re practical. They ask questions. They think about how often they’ll wear the piece and whether it works with the jewelry they already own.

But once they fall in love with something, they know.

Some of my favorite pieces are the ones women have bought for themselves because they tend to become part of them. They’re not sitting in a safe waiting for an occasion.

They’re being worn.

I don’t think buying your own diamond takes the romance out of jewelry.

I think it creates a different kind of romance.
