Lab-Grown Diamonds: The Full Story
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. They have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, including the same crystal structure, hardness and brilliance.
What differs is their origin.
Natural diamonds formed deep within the earth over an extraordinary period of time. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions using technology that allows a diamond to grow.
Same material. Different origin.
Not Every Lab-Grown Diamond Is the Same
Just as with natural diamonds, quality can vary considerably.
Two lab-grown diamonds can have the same carat weight, color and clarity on paper and look completely different in person.
I never choose a diamond from the certificate alone.
I look at proportions, cut and how the diamond handles light. I also look for subtle characteristics and unwanted color undertones that may not be obvious from simply reading the grades.
With elongated shapes, ratio and bow-tie are particularly important. With step cuts such as emerald cuts, clarity and the overall appearance of the stone become even more significant.
The certificate tells me about the diamond. It doesn’t replace seeing the diamond.
Certification
Independent certification is an important part of understanding what you are buying.
A grading report can document characteristics such as carat weight, measurements, color, clarity and cut information where applicable, as well as identify the diamond as laboratory-grown.
But a grading report describes a diamond. It doesn’t choose the diamond for you.
That still requires an eye.
Lab-Grown or Natural?
I don’t believe this needs to be an argument.
Lab-grown and natural diamonds are both diamonds, but they have different origins, stories and price structures.
A natural diamond carries the rarity and geological history of something created by nature.
A lab-grown diamond allows you to achieve a different combination of size, quality and price.
The right choice depends entirely on what matters to you.
If natural origin and rarity are important to you, natural may be the right choice. If your priority is the look, size and specifications you can achieve within your budget, lab-grown may make more sense.
My job is not to tell you which one you should want.
It is to make sure you understand what you are buying.
Why the Stellar Gems Online Collection Is Lab-Grown
I chose lab-grown diamonds for the Stellar Gems online collection because they allow me to create the kind of jewelry I love: beautiful proportions, generous diamonds and strong specifications.
But Stellar Gems is not limited to lab-grown diamonds.
Through our bespoke service, I work with lab-grown diamonds, natural diamonds and precious gemstones, depending on what you are looking for.
Because jewelry shouldn’t begin with a label.
It should begin with what you love and how you want to wear it.
